JumpOn- Week 1 Start your active journey

JumpOn is a beginner running programme that Ordinarily Active presents, both in person or remotely that takes the participant from walking to run/walking. The programme is designed to build slowly and steadily, looking at form and the right approach for longevity.

Here are some of the key pointers from our week 1 and some notes on form.

There is no giant step that does it, it's a lot of little steps - Peter A. Cohen

Key take away from week 1:

  1. Don’t rely on motivation, it’s about creating a habit. Realistic schedule instead of all or nothing approach.
  2. Leave your ego at the door, doesn’t matter if you are first or last.
  3. Trust the process. We live in a world of instant gratification, avoid expecting instant results for something that takes time to build.
  4. Focus less on you, see if you can encourage someone around you.
  5. Hydration - Please remember to hydrate, in this hot humid weather water is not enough. Try a low carb electrolyte drink or 1/16 teaspoon of salt in 550ml.

Form: just start being aware, you don't change everything overnight.

  • Concentrate on your breathing, it is an extremely important building block. If you can try in and out through the nose (takes practice and feels weird for all of us). If that is not possible then in through the nose and out through the mouth. It takes practice but now is the perfect time.
  • Keep your shoulders back but relaxed. This allows you to keep your chest open.
  • Arms bend at the elbow, 90-degree angle at waist level. Arms can really help drive you forward and keep your momentum. The faster you move your arms, the more your legs will follow. The movement is back and forth, avoid crossing your arms.
  • Don’t look down, keep your chin up.

Living Life Actively has been this much fun.
